Base and Alkali
-Base is defined as a substance that can neutralise acids to form salt and water.
-A base which is soluble in water is known as an alkali
-An alkali is a substance that ionises in water to produce hydroxide ions,OH-.
For example, sodium hydroxide,NaOH is an alkali as it dissociates in water to form hydroxide ions in the following manner:
NaOH(s)>Na+(aq) + OH-(aq)
- An alkali has the following physical properties:
*bitter taste
*slippery feel
*pH higher than 7
*turns red litmus paper blue
*conducts electricity

Wave Motion
-Waves are energy carriers.
-Energy can be transferred from one place to another by progressive or travelling waves.
-Waves that do not appear to move are called stationary or standing waves.
-There are two types of waves.
(a)Mechanical waves
-Waves transmitted through medium by particle vibrations.
(Example: Sound waves)
(b)Electromagnetic waves
-Waves transmitted through electromagnetic fields by oscillations of electric field and magnetic field.
(Example: Light)
Understanding Gas Pressure and Atmospheric Pressure
Gas Pressure
-Gas particles in a container are in continuous random motion.
-They collide with the walls of the container and bounce back.
-The gas pressure in the container is a result of the force exerted on the walls by the gas particles during the collisions.
Atmospheric Pressure
-Earth is surrounded by a thick layer of atmosphere.
-Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere,at any point,on the earth's surface.
-Atmospheric pressure acts in all directions.
-Atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude.
